Service Line Inventory

The EPA published the Lead and Copper Rule Revisions (LCRR) in January 2021, which requires all community water systems to submit a service line inventory to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection Agency (DEP). The purpose of the rule is to protect public health by minimizing lead (Pb) and copper (Cu) in drinking water, primarily by reducing the corrosiveness of the water. Lead and copper enter drinking water mainly from the corrosion of plumbing materials that contain lead and copper.

The rule consists of two major parts:

1. All public water systems must develop and inventory to identify the material of all connected water service lines. This includes the part of the service line
owned by the Bedford Township Municipal Authority (BTMA), and the part of the service line owned by the customer.

2. If any service lines are found to be made of Lead, the public water system must devise a plan to replace them. This plan will also include any older galvanized
water service lines which may be connected to a lead fitting (or may have been connected to a lead fitting in the past).

BTMA utilized installation records, repair or replacement records and visual inspection to compile the initial Service Line Inventory that was submitted to DEP on October 16, 2024. BTMA has not encountered any lead service lines. As shown in our Annual Water Quality Reports, BTMA does not have any problems with lead levels in our water supply.
